DI CANIO BACKS PLAYERS

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has praised his players after they managed a stunning 3-1 win over Tottenham in the Barclays Asia trophy. Sunderland were 1-0 down in the match after a goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

It looked like they were going to be knocked out of the competition, but all the work done in the pre-season paid off for Paolo Di Canio and his players after they managed a stunning fightback. Cabral scored the equaliser for Sunderland before former Manchester United defender Wes Brown put the team in front.

The victory was then confirmed following a goal from David Moberg Karlsson. After the match, Di Canio said that he is extremely happy with the result because it was against one of the top teams in the Premier league. Tottenham almost finished in the top four positions last season and they have already strengthened their team significantly by the arrivals of players like Paulinho. Even though Di Canio was not happy with the state of the pitch, he has said that his players demonstrated an incredible attitude to win the match.

He said that he was more than happy with the performance by the players in the second half as it was more than what he had expected from them.

“A win is always good but the way it came made me happy because it is the first official game in a tournament against one of the best sides in the (Premier) League. The pitch wasn’t good but the team have made a sort of revolution playing at this level. I saw many things that made me happy and we want to create a clear identity. We still don’t know each other but we went 1-0 down and came back to win 3-1 in style,” said the former Swindon manager.
